What account recovery is

Account recovery is what a provider does when you tell it "I can't log in": it asks for another proof that it's you before giving you back access. It can take a minute or several days, depending on how much you can prove.

What it is

Account recovery is the path a service offers you when you no longer have your password, your second factor, or both. Instead of just letting you in, it asks for alternative proof: an email you can still access, a number to call, a device where you were already signed in, or answers about the account itself.

The provider has to balance two opposing things: if recovering an account is too easy, anyone can steal it by pretending to be you; if it's too hard, you yourself could be locked out forever. That's why the process is often deliberately slow and cautious.

Since when

It has no birth date: it has existed since there have been password-protected accounts, because someone always forgets theirs. What has changed over the years is what's used to verify you: in the past, security questions ("your first pet's name?"); today, mostly, another device or account you already have access to, because security questions turned out to be easy to guess or look up.

Why it's used

It's used because losing a password or a phone is normal, and an account with no way to recover would be an account lost forever at the first slip-up. The process exists to give you back access without letting anyone else pretend to be you.

The flip side: if you didn't set up any alternative route beforehand — no recovery email, no trusted device, no recovery contact — the process has much less to work with, and the wait gets longer. What you recover quickly is, almost always, what you configured before you needed it.

Do we use it?

Yes, but…

Yes, but set up your recovery routes today; don't trigger the real process just to "test it." Starting an actual recovery can lock the account while it's being resolved.
