Recovery contact

A recovery contact is someone you trust who can give you a code to get back into your account if you forget your password or lose your phone. They never see your data and can't log in on your behalf.

What it is

A recovery contact is someone you choose who can help you get access back to your account if you're locked out. Apple officially calls it an "account recovery contact": when you need it, that person opens their own device, requests the code from there, and tells it to you. You enter it on yours and get your access back.

They don't need to share their Apple ID with you or have access to your photos, emails or passwords. They only hand over a six-digit code, once, when you ask for it. It's different from a legacy contact, which is for when you're no longer around, not for when you've lost your phone.

When it was introduced

Apple unveiled the recovery contact at WWDC in June 2021 and launched it with iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, publicly available from September 2021. Before that, the only route for someone with no trusted device and no trusted number was Apple's standard account-recovery process, which can take days.

Why it's used

It solves a very specific problem: what to do when you have neither your phone, nor another signed-in device, nor access to your trusted phone number. A recovery contact is a key that lives outside your own circle of devices, on someone else's device.

The flip side matters just as much: if you lose your phone and your only recovery contact also uses the same password manager as you, or depends on the same number, you haven't broken anything. The person has to be genuinely independent of your system.

Should you use it?

Yes

Add it. It's free, takes a minute, and gives access to nothing of yours. It's one of the cheapest ways out of a circle with no trusted device.
