Recovery key: what it is

A recovery key is a long code, generated once, that becomes your only door back into an account once you turn it on. If you lose it, no one can give it to you again.

What it is

Each provider gives a different name to the same idea: a long code you generate once and keep, which replaces the normal channels for recovering an account. Apple calls it a "recovery key": a 28-character code that, together with a trusted phone number and device, lets you reset your Apple ID password. Microsoft has the "account recovery code": 25 digits that work as an alternate sign-in method when you can't use your usual verification. Some password managers also offer their own recovery key, separate from the master password.

When it was introduced

There's no single date: each provider added it independently as an advanced security option. What matters isn't when it appeared, but that turning it on changes the rules: for Apple, setting up the recovery key disables the standard account-recovery process, and from that point on only that key plus a trusted device or number can get you back in.

Why it's used

For anyone who wants maximum control over their account, it's a real layer of security: nobody can impersonate you by answering security questions or calling support, because not even the provider can bypass the key. Apple says this literally: if you lose the recovery key, they can't give you a new one.

That's also the flip side. It's the only term in this glossary where turning it on badly — without storing it somewhere safe and findable — can lock you out of your account forever, with no back door at all. It's not something to turn on "just in case" without first thinking through where that key is going to live for years.

Should you use it?

Yes, but…

Yes, only if you have a clear, lasting place to store it, outside your phone. Without that, it's more risk than protection.
